How Rare

I bought How Rare for $35,000 out of the April sales.  Six weeks later she won at Churchill Downs by 5 lengths, the fastest two-year old race of the meet.  She went on to win 4 stakes.  She started 18 times, finishing first or second 14 times earning $280,000.

Air Craft

I claimed Air Craft for $25,000.  He won 3 allowance races in a row plus a stake.  All together, he won 9 times:  three of them stakes.  He broke the track record at Keeneland going 6.5 furlongs.  He held the record for 10 years before someone broke it.

Port Arthur

I claimed Port Arthur for $12,500.  In 2.5 months, he had 3 wins and 1 second-place finish.  He won the $50,000 Governor's Handicap.  He was claimer of the year in Kentucky.

Uncle Fudge

My only shot at the Derby was in 1978 with Uncle Fudge owned by Ed Peter.  I started him 6 times:  2 wins, 2 seconds, 1 third, and 1 fifth all in stakes.  In January when the derby rating came out he was picked 5th.  In February he broke a seamoid that ended my dream of winning the derby.  He had 15 happy years on our farm.
